Cash at the border
Bring as much foreign currency as you like, declare large amounts, and leave your dirhams in Morocco.
Key facts
- Foreign currency comes in freely, with no limit, as notes, cards, cheques or transfers.
- Declare notes and bearer instruments worth 100,000 dirhams or more on arrival. Customs gives you the form.
- Dirhams: no more than 2,000 in or out. Above that it is an exchange offence.
- Leaving with foreign notes: you can buy back what you brought in and changed during the last 12 months, up to 100,000 dirhams' worth a year.
Steps
- On arrival, declare amounts over the threshold and keep the stamped declaration.
- Change money at banks or approved exchange offices and keep every slip in your name.
- Before leaving, buy back foreign currency at the bank with the declaration and the slips.
Watch out
- No declaration on the way in means no proof on the way out. Undeclared notes can be seized.
- Money held in a convertible dirham account or a foreign currency account is not subject to the 100,000 dirham limit.
- Your country of residence has its own rule. In the European Union, 10,000 euros or more in cash must be declared when you enter or leave.
