Moving back for good

One duty-free move per family, a larger allowance since 2026, and real savings on your car if you qualify.

Checked: October 2026

Key facts

  • Your household goods and personal effects come in free of duty, in one move per family.
  • On top of the move, effects with no commercial character are duty-free up to 40,000 dirhams. The ceiling was 30,000 until 2026.
  • The move may be split in two if everything is on the first inventory and both parts pass through the same customs office within six months.
  • Car under three years old: it is treated as three years older when cleared. That is a 25% reduction on a new car, 20% on a one-year-old car, 10% on a two-year-old car. Once only.
  • Aged 60 or over with more than ten years abroad: 90% reduction on the value of one passenger car, once in a lifetime. The car cannot be sold for five years and you must be present at clearance.
  • The two car advantages cannot be combined.

Steps

  1. Ask the authorities of your country for a certificate of change of residence. Where none exists, the consulate legalises a sworn statement.
  2. Draw up a detailed inventory, dated and signed, of everything you move.
  3. For the 90% reduction, ask the consulate for the certificate of ten years' residence.
  4. Clear the move and the car at the customs office of entry.

What to bring

  • Certificate of change of residence, or sworn statement legalised at the consulate
  • Detailed inventory, dated and signed
  • List of professional tools and equipment if you bring your trade with you
  • For the 90% reduction: consular registration, CNIE or passport, proof of ten years abroad, and a valid residence permit

Watch out

  • The 90% reduction covers passenger cars only: no vans, pick-ups, motorhomes, motorbikes or quads.
  • People who already live in Morocco do not qualify for it.
  • Your foreign driving licence is valid one year after you settle. Start the exchange early.
  • Before leaving, ask your pension and health funds in writing what you keep once you live in Morocco.
