Pension, benefits and health cover
What you keep when you spend months in Morocco, or retire there, depends on the country that pays.
Key facts
- Morocco has social security agreements with the main countries of residence. They cover how pensions are paid in Morocco and, in some cases, health care.
- A pension you have earned is normally paid wherever you live. Benefits tied to residence, such as some allowances and supplements, can stop when you leave.
- Pension funds ask for a life certificate every year. The consulate issues it free of charge to pensioners.
Steps
- Write to your pension fund and your health fund before a long stay. Ask what continues, what stops, and which form to carry.
- Ask for the agreement form that gives access to care in Morocco, where the agreement provides one.
- Send the life certificate on time each year.
Watch out
- On sick leave or unemployment benefit? A stay in Morocco without the fund's written agreement can lead to a demand for repayment, even with your doctor's approval.
- Some allowances paid to you in Morocco stop or change at retirement age. Keep every letter from your fund.
- Without an agreement form, medical care in Morocco is paid out of pocket. Take assistance insurance for each trip.
